Candid vs Posed Wedding Photography — Which is Right for You?

12 February 2025· 5 min read

One of the most common questions we get from Chennai couples: "Should we go for candid or traditional posed photography?" The honest answer is that you probably want both — but understanding the difference helps you prioritise your budget and communicate better with your photographer.

What is Candid Wedding Photography?

Candid (or documentary) wedding photography means capturing real, unposed moments as they happen. The amma wiping tears during the kanyadaan. The groom's hands shaking slightly as he ties the thali. The flower girl distracted by a butterfly. These moments happen once and are gone — a skilled candid photographer is always watching for them.

Best for: Couples who value authentic emotion over perfect composition. People who feel uncomfortable being "posed".

What is Traditional/Posed Wedding Photography?

Posed photography means the photographer directs you — where to stand, how to hold hands, where to look. This produces polished, deliberate portraits that are great for formal family photographs, couple portraits, and album centrepieces.

Best for: Key formal portraits — family groups, couple portraits, bridal close-ups. These are the photos that typically go on the wall.

The Reality: You Need Both

The best wedding albums we've created blend both approaches. The candid documentary approach covers the ceremony and reception emotions, while 30–60 minutes of dedicated couple portrait time (usually during golden hour at 5:30 PM) produces the hero images of the album.

Questions to Ask Your Photographer

  • What percentage of your wedding coverage is candid vs posed?
  • Do you set aside dedicated couple portrait time during the day?
  • Can you share a full gallery from a ceremony similar to mine?
  • How do you capture key ritual moments without disturbing the ceremony?
  • Do you use flash during the ceremony? (Traditional ceremonies often prefer no flash)

Chennai Wedding Specific Considerations

Tamil and Brahmin weddings involve many rapid, emotionally charged ritual moments — tying the thali, exchanging garlands, oonjal (the swing ceremony). These moments move fast and require a photographer who knows the sequence of events. Experienced Chennai wedding photographers know these rituals and position themselves before each key moment.
