Drone Wedding Photography in South India — Aerial Shots That Transform Your Album

1 June 2025· 6 min read

There's a moment in almost every wedding album review when couples see the aerial shot — the full spread of the mandap, the courtyard filled with guests, the bride and groom tiny at the centre of a sea of colour — and go completely silent. Drone wedding photography adds a dimension that no ground-level camera can ever match.

At Studio 360 Photography, drone cinematography is an integral part of our wedding and pre-wedding coverage across South India. Here's everything you need to know before deciding if aerial photography is right for your wedding.

What Drone Wedding Photography Actually Looks Like

Drone photography isn't just about flying high. The best aerial wedding shots are carefully composed — altitude, angle, and timing all matter. The most impactful drone wedding shots include:

  • The arrival shot — bride or groom entering the venue from above, surrounded by family
  • The venue overview — showing the full scale of the decorated mandap or hall
  • The crowd shot — hundreds of guests captured from above, centred on the couple
  • Outdoor couple portraits — the couple at the beach, hilltop or heritage site, tiny against a vast landscape
  • Procession shots — baraat, kanyadan procession or church entry captured at altitude
  • The retreat — couple walking away together, filmed from directly above

Best Locations for Drone Wedding Photography in South India

Not every venue is suitable for drone flying. Outdoor venues, beaches, hill stations and large open mandapams work best. Our most popular drone locations include:

  • ECR & OMR, Chennai — beach resorts and open outdoor venues along the coast
  • Mahabalipuram — the Shore Temple and ancient rock formations create extraordinary aerial contexts
  • Pondicherry — promenade, French Quarter rooftops and Chunnambar backwaters
  • Coorg & Chikmagalur — coffee estate drone shots with the Western Ghats as backdrop
  • Ooty & Nilgiris — rolling tea gardens, the Doddabetta peak and Nilgiri Mountain Railway
  • Kerala Backwaters — Alleppey houseboat sessions and Varkala cliff
  • Hyderabad — Falaknuma Palace exterior and the rocky Deccan plateau landscape

Drone Regulations for Wedding Photography in India

India's drone regulations (under DGCA's Digital Sky platform) require photographers to follow specific guidelines:

  • Drones must be registered and pilots must have a valid Remote Pilot Certificate for drones above 250g
  • Flying is prohibited within 5km of airports, defence installations, and certain heritage structures
  • Venue permission is required — we handle this coordination in advance
  • Some heritage sites (like Mahabalipuram shore temple) require specific Archaeological Survey of India clearance
  • Night flying has additional restrictions — early evening golden hour shoots work best

At Studio 360, our drone operators are certified and we handle all permissions as part of your package. We always have a contingency plan if drone flying isn't possible on the day.

Pre-Wedding Drone Photography

Pre-wedding shoots are our favourite context for drone work — we have full flexibility on location, timing, and altitude. A 4–8 hour pre-wedding session at ECR, Pondicherry, Coorg or Ooty will always include a dedicated drone segment during golden hour. The results — couple portraits from above against a vast landscape — are some of the most shared images from any shoot we do.

What to Ask Your Photographer About Drone Coverage

  • Is the drone operator certified under DGCA regulations?
  • Will you handle venue and local authority permissions?
  • What happens if drone flying isn't possible on the day (weather, restriction)?
  • Will aerial footage be included in the wedding highlight reel?
  • What drone do you use and what is the video resolution? (We use DJI Mavic 3 series — 4K/60fps)

Drone shots are one of the most visually impactful additions to any wedding or pre-wedding album. If your venue is suitable and your date is available, we'd love to show you aerial shots from similar events we've covered. Contact Studio 360 to discuss your wedding and we'll let you know whether drone photography is possible for your venue.
