A maternity photoshoot is a celebration of one of the most extraordinary phases of your life. After photographing hundreds of expecting mothers across Chennai, we've learned exactly what works — and what to avoid — when it comes to maternity outfits.
Best Outfit Choices for Maternity Photography
1. Flowy Maxi Dresses and Skirts
A flowy maxi dress is the classic maternity shoot outfit for good reason — the fabric drapes beautifully over the bump and creates movement in outdoor shots. Look for stretchy, breathable fabrics in solid colours. Avoid busy patterns or small prints that distract from the beautiful shape of your bump.
2. Traditional Indian Wear
Sarees, lehengas and anarkali suits can look absolutely stunning for maternity portraits. The drape of a saree worn slightly lower to reveal the bump creates a timeless, elegant look. We can also incorporate props like marigold garlands and diyas for a traditional valaikappu aesthetic.
3. Fitted Bodycon Dresses
A form-fitting dress that hugs the bump can look incredibly powerful and beautiful. Choose a dress in a rich, deep colour — navy, burgundy, forest green, or terracotta all photograph beautifully against Chennai's warm skin tones.
4. Wrap Fabric / Studio Setups
For our studio sessions, we provide soft fabric wraps and off-shoulder looks that are elegant and timeless. These are particularly popular for black-and-white maternity portraits.
Colours That Work Best
- Warm earthy tones — terracotta, mustard, sage green, rust
- Rich jewel tones — emerald, burgundy, royal blue, plum
- Soft pastels — blush pink, lavender, powder blue for a delicate aesthetic
- Classic white/cream — timeless, especially for outdoor golden hour shoots
- Avoid — neon colours, large busy prints, colours that clash with your skin tone
When is the Best Time for a Maternity Shoot?
The ideal window is 32 to 36 weeks of pregnancy. The bump is beautifully round and prominent, but you're still comfortable enough to move around for 1–2 hours. We do not recommend shooting after 37 weeks due to comfort concerns.
What to Bring
- 2–3 outfit options (we'll help you pick on the day)
- Props that are meaningful — ultrasound photos, baby shoes, name letters
- Your partner and older siblings if you'd like them included
- Light snacks and water — your comfort is the priority
